You might assume that Artificial Insemination (AI) training is only for professional stud managers or those with multiple mares. In reality, understanding AI transforms the breeding process even for those with one mare who plan to breed at a professional stud like Twemlows.
In 20 years of AI training, we have seen the empowerment and confidence an understanding of the process offers to breeders, at every level. Whether you are breeding your first foal or your tenth, here’s why AI training could be beneficial to you.
They say knowledge is power. The knowledge gained on our training course gives you the power to maximise pregnancy rates using AI. From understanding the oestrus cycle to disease biosecurity, studying AI enables you to improve your mare’s breeding journey. A clearer understanding of AI procedures can also improve conversations with your vet(s), allowing for a more productive dialogue, informed questions, and a greater understanding of vet recommendations. Twemlows always advise working with veterinary professionals: however, with the training we provide, you will be able to carry out some of the procedures yourself.
Understanding your mare’s reproductive anatomy is important and it has direct implications on breeding success. During our training, seeing uterus, ovary, and follicle structures in ‘real life’ goes beyond ultrasound examinations, offering greater observation through physical examples.
Understanding anatomy is also crucial when working with AI catheters, as proper handling and placement is of paramount importance to both mare welfare and pregnancy success.
Our DEFRA approved course utilises cadavers, allowing you to visualise the route the catheter needs to take. Understanding this anatomy helps you to navigate the cervix safely, avoiding damage to reproductive tissue. Semen can then be deposited in the correct location for optimal conception rates.
It is widely accepted that AI mitigates the risk of injury from an overeager stallion. When implemented correctly, AI can also lower the risk of disease transmission. Record keeping, health procedures and biosecurity are fundamental to the AI process. This includes understanding which tests need to be performed prior to breeding and what their results mean. While no breeding attempt is ever guaranteed 100% success rates, prioritising mare welfare maximises the chance of pregnancy and could reduce the number of breeding cycles and examinations your mare needs.
One of its most appealing aspects, AI allows access to stallion genetics that would otherwise be out of reach. Whether you want to breed to a champion showjumper competing in Europe or a dressage stallion on the other side of the world, frozen and chilled semen offer you various routes to breeding opportunities, previously unavailable.
Understanding AI fundamentals helps you navigate these opportunities. You will know the right questions to ask stallion owners, understand the differences between fresh, chilled, and frozen semen, and make informed decisions about which option suits your mare best.
The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) maintains strict guidelines for AI procedures and publishes a comprehensive guide on best practices. BEVA also approves veterinary practices that meet their high standards, and Twemlows is proud to be on that approved list.
You might be questioning the use of AI training if you are working with professional stud farm. The answer is that even at the best facilities, you remain your mare’s primary advocate. A sound knowledge of the process affects your choosing to work with BEVA-approved professionals, with clearer, understanding-based communication and decision-making.
Should complications arise, as is common in breeding, your knowledge becomes an asset. You will recognise when to ask questions, understand your vet’s recommendations, and participate meaningfully in decisions about your mare’s care.
Our AI Technicians Training combines theoretical learning and practical demonstrations, offering knowledge and experience you can use immediately.
The course includes:
• Understanding mare reproductive anatomy
• Understanding the mare’s oestrus cycle
• Proper AI technique
• Health and biosecurity procedures
• Essential record-keeping for breeding programs
The course is delivered by experienced reproductive vet John Spencer MRCVS, and our resident vets, Monica Morganti MedVet Dipl DECAR MRCVS, and Rebecca Keating MRCVS: between them they have collectively overseen thousands of successful pregnancies. You will work with breeding equipment, practice cadaver material, and, if successful upon examination, will be delivered a DEFRA Certificate of Competence.
One of the most common questions we receive is “If I’m only breeding one mare, is this course for me?”. The answer is yes. In fact, if you’re only breeding one mare, knowledge gained from our AI course is even more crucial: breeding one mare means you don’t have multiple chances to learn from mistakes. You want to get it right the first time. A clear understanding of AI therefore becomes your greatest asset to your mare’s breeding experience.
The 2026 breeding season is approaching fast. Our next AI Technicians Training Course runs on 5th March 2026 at Twemlows Stud Farm.
We limit each course to 10 participants, ensuring high-quality instruction and plenty of hands-on practice. You’ll finish the day having completed a DEFRA-approved course, with a comprehensive course folder, and most importantly, the confidence to make informed breeding decisions for your mare.
