Following The Veterinary Surgery (Artificial Insemination of Mares) Order 2010 that came into force 14th September 2010 (which allows people other than veterinarians to inseminate equines) these courses were introduced in conjunction with DEFRA and the RCVS to ensure horse welfare and the successful development of equine artificial insemination.
There are two courses in this category which can be taken separately or together.
Special discounts are available when booking both courses together.
The one-day course focuses on the AI process and is designed for stud owners and managers, breeders and veterinarians interested in artificial insemination. Delegates are assessed throughout the day, including a practical and short written exam.
The course is approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in conjunction with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
It is delivered by John Spencer MRCVS, Monica Morganti MRCVS and Rebecca Keating MRCVS, all experienced AI lecturers.
Numbers are limited to 10 to ensure high-quality interaction.
The fee includes a full day’s tuition, written and practical exams, a comprehensive course folder, all materials and refreshments. Registration begins at 8:30am and the day concludes with a stud tour at approximately 5:30pm.
Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Competence. They will be competent in AI procedures, however only continued experience will make them proficient.
** Cadaver materials will be used Please note that a minimum of two years knowledge and experience of handling horses is required and DEFRA only issues certificates to persons over the age of 18 years. Some cadaver material will be used in the practical sessions.
