We are committed to ongoing education for our community, and for over 20 years we have been running and hosting courses for both horse owners, veterinary professionals and vet students through universities. 

Twemlows is a DEFRA appointed centre for the provision of AI training courses, and we regularly collaborate with BEVA to provide the latest training in reproductive medicine.

AI Technicians Training Courses

Following The Veterinary Surgery (Artificial Insemination of Mares) Order 2010 that came into force 14th September 2010 (which allows people other than veterinarians to inseminate equines) these courses were introduced in conjunction with DEFRA and the RCVS to ensure horse welfare and the successful development of equine artificial insemination.

There are two courses in this category which can be taken separately or together.

Artificial Insemination Technicians Training

The one-day course focuses on the AI process and is designed for stud owners and managers, breeders and veterinarians interested in artificial insemination. Delegates are assessed throughout the day, including a practical and short written exam.

The course is approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in conjunction with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

It is delivered by John Spencer MRCVS, Monica Morganti MRCVS and Rebecca Keating MRCVS, all experienced AI lecturers.

Numbers are limited to 10 to ensure high-quality interaction.

The fee includes a full day’s tuition, written and practical exams, a comprehensive course folder, all materials and refreshments. Registration begins at 8:30am and the day concludes with a stud tour at approximately 5:30pm.

Course includes:

  • Anatomy of the mare**
  • Care of mare before and after insemination
  • Artificial insemination
  • Record keeping
  • Health procedures and biosecurity

Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Competence. They will be competent in AI procedures, however only continued experience will make them proficient.

** Cadaver materials will be used Please note that a minimum of two years knowledge and experience of handling horses is required and DEFRA only issues certificates to persons over the age of 18 years. Some cadaver material will be used in the practical sessions.

Stallion Collection Training

Stallion AI business logo

A one-day course designed for stallion owners, managers of studs or breeders and veterinarians with an interest in artificial insemination.

This course gives a greater insight to semen collection and analysis, and is run by Stallion AI Services.

The course fee covers one full day’s tuition, a comprehensive course folder with notes for future reference, all course materials and refreshments during the day. The course registration starts at 8.30am and finishes at approximately 5.30pm.

Foaling the Mare

A one-day course designed to give background knowledge and understanding of foaling the mare.

The ‘Foaling the mare’ course is designed for large and small breeders and is delivered by experienced veterinary surgeons and other equine reproduction and stud specialists. The lecture panel includes Dr Jonathan Pycock MRCVS, Dr Monica Morganti MRCVS, Rebecca Keating MRCVS, and Nikee Hudson, Stud Manager at Twemlows Stud Farm.

The day starts at 9.00am with coffee and registration with lectures beginning at 9.15am. The course will aim to finish at 5.00pm with a tour of the facilities. Course notes will be provided and there will be refreshments and a buffet lunch available throughout the day. Please advise any special dietary requirements when booking.

  • Preparation for a safe foaling
  • Complications of late pregnancy
  • Signs of foaling including use of foaling alarms
  • Normal foaling in the mare
  • How to recognise when something is going wrong & what to do

Foal and Yearling Management

A one-day course designed to give an understanding of foal & yearling care.

The day consists of lectures on a variety of topics and ends with practical examination of both foal and yearling.

The ‘Foal and Yearling Management’ course is designed for large and small breeders and is delivered by experienced veterinary surgeons and other equine reproduction and stud specialists. The lecture panel includes Dr Jonathan Pycock MRCVS, Dr Monica Morganti MRCVS, Rebecca Keating MRCVS, farrier specialist Dr Simon Curtis, Nikee Hudson, Stud Manager at Twemlows Stud Farm and feed specialist from Dodson & Horrell.

Dystocia in the Mare & Foal Resuscitation

This course is designed for experienced breeders who have good knowledge of normal foalings. It is a hands-on one-day practical course on the complexities of mare dystocia and basic training in foal resuscitation, led by experts in the field and stud management. There will be use of cadaver materials in the practical sessions.

Please bring clean overalls and sturdy boots for the practical sessions.

The course will be provided by experienced reproductive vets, Dr Jonathan Pycock MRCVS, Dr Monica Morganti MRCVS & Rebecca Keating MRCVS. Course notes will be provided and there will be refreshments available throughout the day, including a buffet lunch. Please advise any special dietary requirements when booking.

  • Complications of mid to late term pregnancy
  • Straight forward foalings to recognising the signs of dystocia
  • Decision masking on if and when to call your vet
  • What can be done prior to vet arrival
  • Knowledge and skills needed to handle a variety of scenarios, including practical sessions with models and phantom mares
  • Principles of caesarean section and fetotomy
  • Basic training in foal resuscitation including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Veterinary CPD

Twemlows Stud has been running equine courses for the past 20 years and have been running veterinary courses since 2020; working with lecturers from the UK and overseas. The courses held here have the great advantage of being able to hold practical demonstrations, gaining ‘hands on’ experience. The facilities with the AI and ET centre and the Stallion collection centre provide a unique opportunity to experience live procedures in all aspects of equine reproduction.

A one-day course designed for veterinarians and new graduates wishing to gain experience in scanning mares for breeding purposes. Delegates should bring their own overalls, and if possible their own scanners, and will be encouraged to discuss case studies of their own with our resident veterinarian, Monica Morganti Dr, Med. Vets DiplACT, MRCVS and Rebecca Keating Med. Vet. MRCVS

Course includes:

  • Routine follicle & uterine evaluation
  • When to breed the mare
  • Examination of the various stages of the mare’s reproductive cycle

To enable delegates to get the best experience and one-to-one attention, we limit registration to four vets per day.

The course begins at 10.00am and finishes at approximately 4.00pm. Refreshments and lunch are provided throughout the day.
