Mare Infertility Investigations

If you have been unable to get your mare in foal despite your best efforts, it may be time to consider infertility investigations. Mare infertility can result from various factors, such as age, previous pregnancies, infections, or reproductive disorders.

What to Expect in an Infertility Investigation

Our vets will take a thorough history from you, and information such as any previous pregnancies and attempts to get in foal will be vital. We will then perform a thorough examination using ultrasound and speculum examinations. We may take biopsies and swabs to help us gain more information.

  • Physical examination, including vulvar conformation

  • Transrectal palpation of reproductive tract

  • Ultrasound examination of reproductive tract

  • Clitoral swab for CEM

  • Uterine biopsy

  • Speculum examination of vagina and cervix

  • Endometrial swab or low volume lavage

  • Stallions previously used

We may advise further treatment following our investigations – our veterinary team will carefully explain these steps with you if they are required.
