Twemlows Stud Farm

Set in the beautiful Shropshire countryside, Twemlows Stud Farm extends a warm welcome to breeders seeking comprehensive, modern care for their mares. As a proud family-run, 3rd generation business led by Edward Matson, we are committed to delivering excellence at every stage of the breeding journey.

Twemlows Stud Farm has evolved from its roots as a dairy farm into one of the UK’s leading centres for Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer. Each year, we care for over 300 mares and work with more than 130 stallions. Our dedicated team of expert reproductive vets and experienced stud grooms provide each horse with personalised attention, which results in our consistently outstanding breeding success rates.

Our stud sits alongside the DEFRA-approved Semen Collection and Freezing Unit, Stallion AI Services, managed by Edward’s brother,  Tullis Matson. While each business operates independently, our close collaboration ensures the highest standards in breeding excellence.

We are deeply invested in education and Twemlows Stud Farm is a DEFRA-appointed centre for training courses. We provide Artificial Insemination training courses for stallion and mare owners or managers, as well as specialised courses such as ‘Foaling the Mare’ and ‘Foal and Yearling Management’. Our aim is to empower mare owners with the knowledge and confidence to achieve successful foalings at home.

We also run a veterinary Ultrasonography course, along with hosting CPD training days veterinary industry organisations, such as BEVA, IVC and Vet Partners.

Our purpose-built facilities are perfectly suited for both practical training and lectures. The comfortable lecture room accommodates 40 to 45 guests and is available for hire, complemented by excellent parking amenities.

Our mission to provide world-class reproductive services, consistently deliver excellence and to continue to remain at the forefront of reproductive knowledge, is what sets Twemlows apart from the rest.

Facilities

Our large foaling boxes are located in our dedicated foaling yard.
Each box has CCTV and we use foaling alarms on the mares.

After foaling, mares and their foals can be turned out in small groups in small paddocks before being turned out in the larger paddocks. Mares and foals can continue to board with us for as long as required. Some youngstock remain with us until they are 3 years old.

Over winter mares and youngstock are housed together in our barns with adlib haylage.

We offer a large herd of reproductively sound recipient mares for Embryo Transfer services. This reduces the need for you to source a recipient mare and screen her suitability.
