EMBRYO TRANSFER CENTRE

Twemlows Hall specialises in Embryo Transfer and 2008 was highlighted by the arrival of Headley Britannia's two foals born here at the stud. The foals were the result of embryo transfers carried out in 2007 (awarded through the Twemlows Hall Burghley Scholarship - see below). Since then we have successfully carried out many embryo transfers at the stud and last year introduced the Transported Embryo Service. Please call us to find out more about this service.

Recipient mare "Pippa" with her filly foal
born in April 2008

We are once again holding an Embryo Transfer Open Day on Friday 26th February 2010 for those interested in using this modern technology. We will be demonstrating ET techniques and discussing the practical and financial implications of ET programmes in competition horses. If you are interested in our Open Day and would like further details please contact Liz Wilkinson on 01948 664966 or by email lizwilkinson@twemlows.co.uk. Alternatively complete and return the tear off slip at the bottom of the Open Day invitation (click on icon below).

NOELLE LOWRY BVSc Cert EM (Stud) MRCVS

Noelle heads up the Embryo Transfer department with dedicated purpose built facilities and is responsible for the recipient mare herd.

As a result of the demand we have had for embryo transfer work we are looking for recipient mares over 16.2hh, who have for some reason become unrideable and are looking for a good home, age 3 to 9 years with no stable vices. We are given some mares - lent others - and occasionally pay for some!

TWEMLOWS HALL BURGHLEY SCHOLARSHIP

In order to encourage more people to breed from the top mares Twemlows Hall are offering a scholarship to the best of the best in three day eventing.

More British Horses

The British Equestrian Federation's (BEF's) vision for More People, More Horses, More Places and More Medals, specifically More Horses, has been generously supported by the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and Twemlows Hall Stud Farm.

The BEF's British Breeding seeks to promote the breeding of British horses and ponies and, through the Twemlows Hall Burghley Award, we see the highest placed British bred or domiciled mare at Burghley this year (provided she finishes in the top 20%) presented with a package for two embryo transfers to be taken up in the year following the event, valued at up to £5000.

This Award means that one of the impediments to using top mares to breed from, that they are often in the prime of their competitive lives as well as at the optimum age for breeding, is overcome. Embryo transfer enables foals to be bred from top mares, without disrupting their competitive careers. The 2008 Award for the highest placed mare went to Dr Polly Taylor's "Little Tiger" (see photo above), ridden by Phoebe Buckley who finished 16th overall. Little Tiger is by "Java Tiger", bred by Val Gingell out of her Irish TB eventing mare, "Hopper". In September 2009 the mare, King's Temptress, ridden by Mary King and owned by Derek Baden, won the award. We are very much looking forward to welcoming King's Temptress here in the Spring.

Says Andrew Finding, Chief Executive of the BEF "It is one of the most important objectives of the Strategy for the Horse that we should seek to have an increasing number of our international riders mounted on British bred horses in the future and the support offered by both the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and Twemlows Hall Stud Farm are positive advances which we welcome".

Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Event Director, Elizabeth Inman, says "We are pleased that Twemlows Hall is making this award in support of the national Strategy and hope to see the offspring of the embryo transfer breeding programme competing at Burghley in the future".

TWEMLOWS HALL BSJ SCHOLARSHIP

Twemlows Hall Stud Farm is also offering two embryo transfers to the highest place British bred or domiciled mare in the annual BSJA ratings. The objective of the scholarship is to encourage owners to compete with mares in showjumping, and encourage the best to be bred from while they are still competing and at their optimum breeding age with minimal interruption of their competition career.

The first winner of this award is Mr John Bosher's "Fresh Direct Corlato", ridden by Tim Stockdale. Fresh Direct Corlato was the highest placed mare and 4th overall in the 2007 year end rankings.

The 2009 award goes to Limelight De Breve, owned by Mr and Mrs John Renwick and ridden by their daughter, Laura. Limelight is one of the top horses in the country, winning both here and abroad, and she has helped Laura to achieve her lifelong ambition in 2009 when she won the Queens Cup at Hickstead. Laura says she is delighted to have the chance to both breed and compete with her in 2010.

To be eligible for the award mares must:

be British bred or domiciled
finish in the top 50 horses in the annual BSJA ratings
take up the scholarhip at Twemlows Hall in the year following the award
not have previously won this scholarhip and should that situation arise, the award will be to the next highest place mare in the ratings that is eligible.
