ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION TECHNICIANS TRAINING COURSES 2009/10


DEPARTMENT FOR ENVIRONMENT, FOOD & RURAL AFFAIRS (DEFRA) APPROVED COURSE IN CONJUNCTION WITH ROYAL COLLEGE OF VETERINARY SURGEONS (RCVS)

Following the new legislation that came into force 6th July 2004, The Veterinary Surgery (Artificial Insemination of Mares) Order 2004, which allows people other than veterinarians to inseminate equines, the two-day courses were introduced in conjunction with DEFRA and the RCVS to ensure horse welfare and the successful development of equine artificial insemination.

2 & 3 March 2010

7 & 8 April 2010

The course is designed for owners/managers of studs/stallions/breeders and veterinarians with an interest in artificial insemination. Knowledge and experience of horses is important before considering this course. Delegates are assessed throughout the two day course which includes a practical and a short written test paper.

Successful delegates are awarded:

A "CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE IN ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION OF EQUINES"

The course provides instruction on semen collection and preparation for delivery to the stud, semen assessment, preparation of mares, insemination techniques and post insemination care. Instruction will include working with fresh, chilled and frozen semen.

The course is delivered by a team of professional experienced lecturers in AI led by Dr Jonathan Pycock MRCVS, who is supported by the following at each course - Dick Quan Taylor MRCVS, Dr Caroline Argo MRCVS and Tullis Matson of Stallion AI Services Ltd. Maximum number of delegates on each course is 16 ensuring high quality interaction between lecturers and delegates.

Course delegates are divided into two groups for practical sessions.
All lectures and practical sessions are held on the one site at Twemlows Hall Stud Farm.

Course Fee: £540.00 incl VAT

The course fee covers two full days tuition with both written and practical examinations, a comprehensive course folder with notes for future reference as well as the course itself, all course materials and refreshments during the day. The course starts at 08.30 each day and finishes at approximately 17.30 on the first day and 17.00 on the second day.

DEFRA only issue ‘certificates of exemption’ to persons over the age of 18 years.

Successful candidates will be competent in AI procedures but only continued experience will make them proficient.

TRAINING COURSE

FOALING COURSE


A one day course designed for large and small breeders to give background knowledge and understanding of foaling the mare

28 February & 27 March 2010

The course covers the following areas:

Preparation for a safe foaling
Complications of late pregnancy
Signs of foaling including use of Foaling Alarms
Inducing the mare
Normal foaling in the mare
How to recognise when something is going wrong & what to do
Examination of the placenta
Newborn foal examination
The orphan foal and adoption

The course is delivered by very experienced veterinary surgeons in Foaling and Equine Reproduction. The lectures will be conducted by: Dr Jonathan Pycock MRCVS of Equine Reproductive Services and Dick Quan-Taylor MRCVS of Fyrnwy Equine Clinics. Miss Johanna Vardon MBE of The National Foaling Bank will give a talk on orphaned foals and the work of the National Foaling Bank. Course notes will be provided.

The course starts with registration and coffee between 08.30 and 09.00; lectures begin at 09.15 and the course finishes at approximately 16.45.
